[IC design] Russian scholars develop nano chips for ultra fast information transmission
According to the report of Russia's satellite news agency on July 20, physicists from the "photonics" national technology initiative capability center affiliated to Russia's perm State Research University, together with scholars from St. Petersburg, have proposed a method to improve the efficiency of electronic equipment and computer computing - a new optical radiation source.
The researcher said, "researchers have created a new optical radiation source. Its size is equivalent to that of compact chips used in Nano Electronics, but its characteristics make it possible to speed up information transmission in microcircuits many times."
The researcher explained that improving the speed of information processing is one of the main tasks of the development of computer technology today. For this reason, the parallel operation of multiple computing cores in a processor is widely used. However, the overall computing performance of the device is more affected by the communication speed between cores than by the speed of a single core.
The researchers added: "the highest connection speed can be achieved with optical fiber lines. They are widely used for communication between workstations, but their size is too large to be used in computing devices."
Russian scholars have proposed a new generation of optoelectronic microchips: as compact as classic metal chips and as efficient as optical chips. Dennis Lebedev, a researcher in the Renewable Energy Laboratory of Alferov St. Petersburg State Research University of the Russian Academy of Sciences, explained that "we have developed a unique method to form optical nanowires".
The researchers concluded that the results obtained will be able to manufacture a new generation of optoelectronic chips, thus improving the computing performance and efficiency of modern computers several times.
